Tiles Installation

When selecting a finish for your walls and floors, tiles are a popular choice for various reasons. Tiles are easy to maintain as they are durable against wear and tear. Natural colours and thoughtful arrangement of tiles create a lasting style that will continue to charm your home for years to come.

Ceramic and homogeneous tiles can be installed after properly preparing the surface to receive the new tiles. Screeding is usually required to prepare a subfloor, before adhesive mortar is evenly applied to ensure complete bonding of the new tiles.

If you have an existing tiled surface, overlaying new tiles over existing tiles is also possible. However, be sure to check that your doors and other fixtures allow for at least 10-15mm raise in floor height.

Ceramic vs Homogeneous Tiles

Homogeneous tiles are actually type of porcelain tile, but they are of the full-body variety. They have a consistent composition of materials throughout the entire body off the tile. Therefore, the front, back, and sides of the tile should be of the same colour and texture. This is different from glazed porcelain tiles, which is characterised as it has a layer of glaze applied on a white clay porcelain body. Unlike glazed porcelain tiles which might suffer from wear and tear on its surface over time, homogeneous tiles are unlikely to suffer the same issue due to its material consistency throughout the thickness of the tile.

When selecting your tiles, it would be useful to know that porcelain and ceramic tiles are the two main tile categories. Porcelain tiles, being denser and less porous, are more suited for indoor and outdoor use due to their durability. Ceramic tiles, on the other hand, are usually recommended for interior walls and floors, or areas where the foot traffic is light.

Wood Tiles

Increasingly popular among homeowners is the wood tile – these homogeneous floor tiles have a wood-like finish but enjoys the durability of tiles, which make it a great choice for the bedroom, bathrooms and kitchens.
